Safety Training
The Safety Manual
The Safety Manual is designed to create a culture of safety inside your business. The business owner should read and become familiar with its contents. It should be referenced as policy when questions arise.
Towards the center of the manual, you will find equipment inspection sheets these should be used to set up an inspection logbook. All equipment used for fall protection must be inspected per manufacturer guidelines. A good rule of thumb is to inspect all equipment, including ladders, quarterly. These sheets should be kept in a three-ring binder in the office. Should an accident occur they will be referenced and will be a protection to the employer when produced.
All new hires should be given a copy of the manual. This can be a PDF copy. They should read and understand that the company has safety policies and that the manual will be the guiding document for the company.
In the back of the manual, there are specific sign off sheets that the employer will want each employee to sign off on once the manual has been explained. The topics needing to be signed off on will help establish a documented training program for the employer. Keep the signed-off copies in the employees’ file. You may need to train employees in the topics included on the sheets.
Lastly, you can choose topics out of the manual to discuss in employee meetings and so forth. It would be a good practice to review the manual annually with all employees.
Ladder & Roof Safety:
The safety videos are meant to be used when you hire a new employee. Ladders and Roof Top Safety are the two most crucial areas and areas that serious accidents can occur.
Safety videos are considered acceptable training however they must be used properly. You can’t send the videos home with the employee and say watch these you start work tomorrow. However, videos should be shown at the office where the employee has a chance to interact and ask questions to the owner about the subject being taught.
When you hire a new employee or when it has become evident that employee needs further training, have the employee watch the videos. There is a brief test that is included with each video. Have the employee watch the video and then complete the test making sure to sign their name and date. This test should be retained in their employee file for both videos.
It would be a good practice to show the videos to all employees annually to reinforce the safety culture you are promoting in the classroom. When doing so have all employees retake the tests please keep all tests in employee file for reference should an accident occur.
