Dryer Vent Cleaning Process

Dryer Vent Cleaning NOTES:

  • Remember: NEVER run the drill backwards. This can make you lose the brush and extensions inside the tube and be a big waste of time.

Inside the home:

  1. Unplug dryer
  2. Pull the dryer away from the wall. Be mindful of gas line if gas dryer.
  3. Remove dryer flex-tube from dryer and wall if present.
  4. Set up vacuum to catch any lint and dust in air when working. Always have vacuum sucking from where you insert the brush and have vacuum running constantly while you are brushing.
  5. With 4” brush, brush interior duct work from dryer exhaust tube to where duct exits the home. If it’s a long stretch of ductwork, go at least halfway and get the other half from outside.
  6. Brush inside of dryer exhaust vent at rear of dryer.
  7. Vacuum lint trap, and with 2” brush, brush and vacuum the lint trap area.  Inspect inside lint trap with light and ensure that all visible lint has been removed. Reassemble lint trap.
  8. Reassemble dryer tube. Tape to cover leaks if necessary. Put dryer back against wall. Plug dryer back in.
  9. Clean up and dust lint of off outside of dryer and on the ground.

Outside the home:

  1. Carefully remove louvers if necessary. Old louvers are brittle and can easily break. Slightly bend louvers in the middle to make an “arc” of the louver – this will make the louver “shorter” and easier to remove. Clean and and remove all lint from outside of dryer vent hood. Lint often builds up inside of hood and causes louvers or flaps to stick open.
  2. Insert 4” brush and extensions into the ductwork and brush the remainder of the ductwork in the home.
  3. Place mesh bag over exterior hood vent and secure with wire.  Go inside home and run dryer for 2-5 minutes and make sure it all works and sounds good with no weird sounds in dryer tube or any vent leaks.
  4. Go outside, make sure that it is venting normal and expelled all loose dryer lint & debris. If not, you may need to brush again and longer while the dryer is running.
  5. Once completed, remove mesh bag, reinsert any louvers you removed. Clean up and lint from area outside and pack up your tools.
